Cape Coral · Canal Map

Cape Coral’s canals, classed and mapped.

Cape Coral has more than 400 miles of canals, according to the City, in three classes: direct gulf access, indirect gulf access and freshwater. The map below draws the same City canal layer as our Waterway Map, where you can look up canal names by address.

The Map

Where do Cape Coral canals lead, and how far is the ride?

Saltwater canals lead to the Caloosahatchee River or Matlacha Pass and on to the Gulf; freshwater canals stay inland. These three real routes, short, median and long, come from the same data that powers our Waterway Map.

The Classes

Direct, indirect or freshwater: which canal class is which?

Direct gulf accessA route from the dock to open water without a fixed bridge, out the Caloosahatchee River or Matlacha Pass toward San Carlos Bay, Pine Island Sound and the Gulf. In our route file most of these routes start in the southeast and southwest quadrants. Listings often call it sailboat access; check depth and the route for your boat.No fixed bridge
Indirect gulf accessReaches the Gulf with a fixed bridge or another constraint on the route. Recorded City bridge clearances have a median of about 8 ft above mean high water, so taller boats may not fit. Routes with a fixed bridge have a median time of about 46 minutes at 5 mph.Bridge on route
FreshwaterNo boat route to the Gulf. City data shows freshwater canals in all four quadrants, and every canal mapped in the northeast quadrant is freshwater. Kayak, paddleboard and fishing water. No Gulf route
SeawallEvery canal class comes with a seawall to own. Have it inspected and get a written estimate for any repair on that lot before you close.Carrying cost

The canals were dug as the city was developed. The City canal layer behind this map holds 959 canal polygons, 630 classed saltwater and 328 freshwater, and the City bridge inventory holds 159 bridge records. Data: City of Cape Coral Public Works GIS and bridge inventory; times at a constant 5 mph.

Canal FAQ

Direct or indirect, how fast, and what happened to the lock?

What is the difference between direct, indirect and freshwater canals?

Direct gulf access describes a route from the dock to open water without a fixed bridge. Indirect gulf access reaches the Gulf with a fixed bridge or another route constraint; recorded City bridge clearances have a median of about 8 feet above mean high water, which can rule out a taller boat. Freshwater canals do not connect to the Gulf by boat. The Chiquita Lock was removed in 2025, and fixed bridges still decide direct or indirect.

Do all gulf access canals reach the Gulf quickly?

No. Direct or indirect describes the bridges on the route, not travel time. At a steady 5 mph, mapped routes without a fixed bridge have a median of 12 minutes to open water, and the longest takes about 104 minutes. Route the specific address on the Waterway Map.

What is the Chiquita Lock removal?

The Chiquita Lock once held boats on many southwest Cape Coral routes. The City removed it in 2025 as part of its South Spreader Waterway Enhancement Project, so those routes no longer wait at a lock. Whether a route counts as direct or indirect gulf access now depends on the fixed bridges along it.
