What is North Fort Myers like, one bridge from downtown?

North Fort Myers is an unincorporated community in Lee County on the north side of the Caloosahatchee River, across from downtown Fort Myers. Cape Coral borders it on the west and Charlotte County on the north. US-41 crosses the river on the Caloosahatchee Bridge and US-41 Business on the Edison Bridge, so downtown is a bridge away, and I-75 runs through the community at Exit 143.

  • Two bridges to downtown

The Caloosahatchee Bridge carries US-41 into Fort Myers, and the twin one-way spans of the Edison Bridge carry US-41 Business to downtown. The first Edison Bridge opened on February 11, 1931, Thomas Edison's 84th birthday, and he was the first to drive across it.

  • Room to spread out

The community covers about 53 square miles and counted 42,719 residents in 2020, reaching from the river north to the Charlotte County line.

  • A lagoon instead of a canal

Brightwater is a newer community built around a six acre freshwater lagoon. It is a lagoon for swimming, not a canal with a boat route to the Gulf.

  • River boating on the Okeechobee Waterway

Riverfront homes here face the Caloosahatchee, part of the Okeechobee Waterway, which meets the Gulf in San Carlos Bay about 10 miles southwest of Fort Myers.

  • I-75 and the roads out

I-75 leads about 67 miles northwest to the Sarasota area and 38 miles south to the Naples area, and State Road 78 runs west about 16 miles to Pine Island Center.

The river and the bridges into Fort Myers are the landmarks here. We compare the bridge route, the access to the home, any community rules and the utility service for each address you like.

A few starting points.

Across the Caloosahatchee

Sailboats on the Caloosahatchee, downtown across the river.

North Fort Myers sits on the north shore of the Caloosahatchee, and the river is wide here, about a mile across. Boats from Moody River Estates and Overiver Shores head west toward the Gulf or east up the river toward the Franklin Lock, and downtown Fort Myers is just over the Edison and Caloosahatchee bridges for dinner by the water.

Water access belongs to the lot, not the neighborhood name, so on a river home we check the dock and the route for that exact address before you fall for the view.

  • Riverfront Moody River Estates and Overiver Shores Two river communities to compare.
  • Bridges Edison and Caloosahatchee Downtown Fort Myers is across the river. Hancock Bridge Parkway runs into central Cape Coral.
  • Inland Room along US-41 Inland streets off US-41 and I-75 offer another setting to compare.

Boating here runs on the open river rather than a canal grid, part of the Okeechobee Waterway that crosses Florida.

Daily life

Schools, the bridges and everyday errands.

  • Schools Lee County, with two nearby high schools

North Fort Myers is in the School District of Lee County, which lists North Fort Myers High School and Riverdale High School. The district sets school attendance zones; use its address lookup for the current answer.

  • Water River home or inland home?

For a river home, we review the route from the dock to the Gulf with your boat specs in hand.

  • Commute One bridge to downtown

The Edison and Caloosahatchee bridges put downtown Fort Myers a short drive away, and Hancock Bridge Parkway runs into central Cape Coral, so restaurants and errands on both sides are close.

Areas and property choices

Why do buyers choose North Fort Myers?

It sits in the middle of everything: Cape Coral on its western border, downtown Fort Myers across the river, Charlotte County to the north and I-75 running through at Exit 143. Homes range from river communities and a lagoon community to manufactured home parks and larger rural lots.

  • River access Real Caloosahatchee frontage

Overiver Shores has single-family homes directly on the river, and Moody River Estates is a river community. From either one, the run west to the Gulf is down the river.

  • Location Bridges in every direction

The Edison Bridge carries US-41 Business and the Caloosahatchee Bridge carries US-41 into Fort Myers. The first Edison Bridge opened on February 11, 1931, Thomas Edison's 84th birthday.

  • Parks Prairie Pines Preserve

Prairie Pines Preserve covers 2,684 acres of Conservation 20/20 land, with a boardwalk, marked trails, birding and horseback riding.

  • Space Room to spread out

North Fort Myers covers about 54 square miles, so rural lots and larger yards are part of the mix away from the river.

  • Lagoon Brightwater

Brightwater is a newer community built around a six acre freshwater lagoon for swimming, a beach-style amenity rather than canal waterfront.

On the river or inland: which North Fort Myers fits you?

The river communities sit along the Caloosahatchee shore, and the rest of the map spreads inland along US-41.

  • Map of Moody River EstatesMap Gated, on the river Moody River Estates A community beside the Caloosahatchee. Review the association records for amenities, fees and any boat access that comes with the home.
  • Map of Overiver ShoresMap Sailboat access, direct river Overiver Shores Single-family homes directly on the Caloosahatchee, with sailboat access to the Gulf down the Caloosahatchee.
  • Inland value and space US-41 / Cleveland Ave Corridor Inland homes sit along and off US-41, from established streets to manufactured home communities such as Lake Fairways, where each park sets its own lot rent and rules, out to larger rural lots.
